This article is an autobiographical account by Luis Alvarez of a visit to Ernest Lawrence’s laboratory at Berkeley in the summer of 1934. He describes his excitement at seeing the 27-inch cyclotron and the Sloan tube. Most of the article focuses on the different work style of Berkeley compared to the University of Chicago. Instead of physicists working on their own problems individually, the physicists at Berkeley worked together in a communal atmosphere. This article is one in an autobiographical series by scientists whose work contributed to the building of the atomic bomb.
