This book is a history of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, New Mexico, which was designed and run by Sandia National Laboratories. The book begins by looking at the early history of nuclear waste and the decision by the government of the United States to ask Sandia to design a deposit site for transuranic waste created by the defense industry. The book then follows the search for a suitable location, the actual building of the site, and the long wait in the 1990s for WIPP to open. The author covers the important issues concerning WIPP, including disagreements between the State of New Mexico and the Department of Energy (DOE), tests conducted to ensure the site would be safe, compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) rules, and the impacts of the policies of changing administrations on the development of the site. The book contains many color photographs and includes in the appendices a timeline of important events relating to WIPP.
