This volume was the first summary of information on thorium processing technology. Much of the material is taken from declassified Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) publications. The book contains information on the uses and physical and chemical properties of thorium and its compounds. In an important example, thorium-232 can be used to produce fissionable uranium-233 by neutron absorption in a process similar to the production of fissionable plutonium-239 from uranium-238. There are also detailed descriptions of thorium metallurgy, health and safety considerations of thorium production, and chemical and physical procedures for testing for the presence of thorium metal.
