This book is a collection of 17 essays which provide varying points of view about the value of arms control and the threat posed to the United States by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The book was published to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (ACDA) in 1986, but spans four decades of the nuclear era. The authors include major theorists such as Bernard Brodie, Fred Ikle, Thomas Schelling, and Albert Wohlstetter, as well as key policy makers such as Robert McNamara and James Schlesinger. More than half of the essays were written after 1980.
