This classic work is based on three lectures on the effects of thermonuclear war delivered at Princeton University in March 1959 by Herman Kahn, who had worked on nuclear issues. The first edition of the book evoked controversy when it appeared in 1960, and brought the author to national prominence and some notoriety. The book contains a quantitative, systematic analysis of the threats and results of a thermonuclear war as perceived in the period after the detonation of the first hydrogen bombs by the United States and the Soviet Union. The lectures are titled The Nature and Feasibility of Thermonuclear War, The Formulation and Testing of Objectives and Plans, and World War I through World War VIII. The 18 page preface to the paperback 1969 edition contains the author's thoughts ten years after the lectures.
