This is a report of an international commission that studied the health and environmental effects of nuclear weapons testing. The report focuses on the testing programs of the first five nuclear nations: the United States, the former Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, and China. The tests include atmospheric ones conducted before 1981 and underground detonations through 1990. The report contributes information in three areas: it recalculates the number of cancer cases and deaths expected from global fallout; it provides a review of each nation's nuclear weapons testing programs; finally, it calculates the inventories of radionuclides produced by underground testing. The report is intended to inform the general public of the testing programs and their consequences.
