This CD ROM contains a 511 page book complete with photographs and maps of sites in the U.S. associated with the Manhattan Project and subsequent nuclear weapons development throughout the Cold War. It provides an view of the nuclear weapons complex that spread to numerous locations throughout the United States. Topics covered include the decisions that initiated the Manhattan Project; mining, milling and refining uranium and thorium; enriching isotopes of uranium, hydrogen, and lithium; fabricating reactor fuel and control elements; operating reactors and recovering their products; designing and manufacturing the weapons; and testing the weapons. The authors' sources include references in print and video, personal interviews, and visits to the sites. There is an extensive bibliography that provides references to other accounts of the Cold War and the nuclear weapons complex in the United States. There is a companion website. |
