Using recently declassified information, the author of this article explains the connection between French nuclear testing in the Pacific region and French control of New Caledonia and French Polynesia. The original Sahara desert nuclear test site in Algeria was abandoned for both technical and political reasons. The French government then tightened control over potential Pacific test sites by removing nationalistic local leaders on those islands. The Mourura atoll in French Polynesia was later used for nuclear testing.
