This book chronicles the loss and recovery of a hydrogen bomb from an United States air force bomber in the Mediterranean Sea off Palomares Spain in 1966. The collision between the bomber and a refueling aircraft resulted in the release of four unarmed hydrogen bombs, three of which fell on land around Palomares. The fourth fell into the sea and required extensive efforts for its retrieval. The author details the accident, the search, and the recovery of the weapon as well as the political and military effects of the accident.
