TITLECritical Masses: Citizens, Nuclear Weapons Production, and Environmental Destruction in the United States and Russia
CITYCambridge, MA

This book presents studies of the enormous environmental problems caused by plutonium production facilities in the United States and the former Soviet Union. It compares the political activism that grew out of these problems in both countries. The authors focus on two major nuclear material production facilities: the American facilities at Hanford, Washington, and the Soviet complexes at Mayak in the Chelyabinsk region. They explain the historical legacies of nuclear environmental depredations, and public awareness of the problems. The text synthesizes the broad issues of nuclear waste and citizen activism as a catalyst for cleanup.
