This translation of a French book is the memoir of Bertrand Goldschmidt’s extensive experiences as a French chemist working in nuclear science. Goldschimdt worked as a young man in the laboratory of Marie Curie, then later on the Manhattan Project, and finally on nuclear weapons programs in France. He tells the inside story of the international rivalry that fueled nuclear proliferation. The chapters on the French bomb project and the political problems within it are especially interesting.
