Published in the wake of Pakistan's 1998 nuclear tests, this book examines Pakistan's position in its conflict with India and how that conflict could turn into a nuclear war or an enhanced arms race. It explains the history of Pakistan's decisions regarding nuclear weapons. It also describes in detail the options open to Pakistan, including restricting the number of nuclear weapons it makes or preparing for a nuclear arms race with India. The options are analyzed by different experts. The book includes a survey from 1996 of opinions among the elite of Pakistan concerning nuclear weapons. Appendices contain the survey data and questionnaire.
