This hour-long documentary film tells the story of the area in Russia called Chelyabinsk that suffered three nuclear accidents that were unknown to its inhabitants. The Mayak nuclear facility, located in that area near the Ural Mountains, discharged nuclear waste into the river from the time it was built in the 1940s, and had many accidents, including a fire. Certain nearby areas have anywhere from twenty-five to a hundred times normal background radiation. The film shows the effects on families who experienced contaminated water and suffered with cancer due to radiation. Until the early 1990s, no one outside the government knew about the severity of the problem.
