This fifth edition of an informative guide to nuclear waste and its management presents facts in a clear and simple manner. It answers questions and concerns about wastes, and explains the concepts of radioactivity and the different kinds of nuclear radiation. The book briefly summarizes the different kinds of wastes and mentions the discarded materials of the Manhattan Project and the laws surrounding waste disposal. It also describes the transportation, recycling, and disposal of various kinds of waste. Most interesting are the sections on the biological effects of radiation, and health, safety, and environmental protection concerns. The fifth edition, published in 2003, updates the fourth edition published in 1994. The fifth edition removes dated material and includes over twenty pages of new information and analysis, from the inclusion of new technology to the heightened concern of terrorism. The fifth edition also contains an updated reference section containing many sources of suggested further reading, organized into subject categories. These include reliable web sources. The book is intended for students and interested members of the public.
