This two-volume memoir describes what Harry S Truman accomplished and how he made decisions during his seven and a half years as President of the United States. The first volume, entitled Year of Decisions, describes the shock of becoming President after Franklin Roosevelt’s death in 1945. During that year, the first atomic bomb was dropped, World War II ended, and the Cold War began. Years of Trial and Hope is the title of the second volume, which deals with the Marshall Plan and the Truman Doctrine, the creation of Israel as a state, the continuing Cold War, Truman's re-election, the North Atlantic Treaty, the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the Korean War. The volumes include interesting letters from Truman correspondance.
