This historic 1932 letter to the editor from Harold Urey and his research collaborators announces their discovery of deuterium, also known as heavy hydrogen. The letter briefly describes their experiment and presents evidence for an isotope of hydrogen with a mass of two. Urey won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1934 for the discovery of deuterium.
