This collection of essays written by a nuclear physicist discusses the role of scientist-administrator in mediating science and public policy. Alvin Weinberg refers to scientific administration as “trans-science”, the social aspect of science. His essays cover topics such as the dilemmas of scientific administrators, criteria for policy decision-making, nuclear armaments, energy policy, and public perception of nuclear power. The essays are written for educated people in the general public and do not require a technical background except in following some of the arguments. The author is a former member of the President’s Scientific Advisory Committee, and former director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
