This classic 1959 film, based on the novel of the same name by Nevil Shute, tells the story of the crew of a United States submarine that docks in Australia after a nuclear war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union has broken out in 1964. The northern hemisphere has already been contaminated with lethal radioactive fallout, and the inhabitants of Australia have only a few months to live before the fallout reaches their country. The plot focuses on how the submarine crew members and the people whose fates become intertwined with theirs cope with grief and how they spend their final days. The film depicts civilization and society breaking down on the verge of apocalypse and humanity uniting before the end. The superb and moving film features an extraordinary cast, including Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Anthony Perkins, and Fred Astaire.
