This book presents the history of Project Chariot, the Atomic Energy Commisssion’s plan to create a new harbor along the Alaskan coastline by detonating six thermonuclear weapons there in the 1950s. Led by Edward Teller, the proponents of this idea were backed by important elements of the military and scientific communities of the United States, and might have accomplished their goal if a few persevering opponents had not fought against the idea. A small, vocal group of Eskimos, the first environmental activists, and some arctic-dwelling scientists stood up to the bureaucracy and succeeded in stopping this project from occurring.
