This article examines new nuclear reactor designs that can make nuclear power more attractive. It briefly reviews three of the four basic types of reactors, heavy-water, gas-cooled, and liquid metal, and then concentrates on the fourth, light-water reactors (LWRs). It provides detailed descriptions and diagrams of the two popular LWRs, the boiling water reactor and the pressurized-water reactor. It closes with a discussion of the economic and safety issues that determine the feasibility of producing power with each of the four reactor types.
