This unique survey deals with the treatment of nuclear war in fiction through 1984. The initial five chapters provide a history of the nuclear war theme and examine the causes and aftermath of nuclear war as treated in literature. The bulk of the work is a detailed annotated bibliography of over 800 novels and short stories. According to the author, "Fiction about nuclear war can have an admonitory effect which may be valuable in a world perpetually perched on the brink of an atomic holocaust" (p. ix).
