This book is a collection of papers written by Enrico Fermi, physicist and pioneer of atomic energy; it is the first of two volumes containing the majority of Fermi’s works, totaling 275 papers. The book lists all of Fermi’s known writings before he left Italy in 1938, and reprints them, with the exceptions of his books, and his articles published in Enciclopedia Italiana. The editors have included the most detailed version of papers of which Fermi wrote more than one version, and they have also favored English language versions. A significant portion of the papers appear in Italian, German, and French; each paper has an introduction in English discussing its significance. The papers deal with neutron bombardment of the elements that produced many new radioisotopes, work performed before the discovery of fission in 1938. A detailed biographical introduction is also included.
