PUBLISHERCornell University Press
CITYIthaca, NY

This book presents part of the 1,047-page transcripts of the 1954 hearings of the Atomic Energy Commission’s (AEC) Personnel Security Board that resulted in the revocation of Robert Oppenheimer’s security clearance. The board questioned the loyalty of the former head of the Manhattan Project because of his past associations with communists and communist sympathizers. The introduction and a short informative essay detail the events leading up to the hearings, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) surveillance of Oppenheimer, and describe the hearings themselves and the people involved. The influence of Senator Joseph McCarthy and McCarthyism on the events of the hearing is analyzed. The transcripts cover the most important testimonies during the hearings, including Oppenheimer’s, Edward Teller’s, Hans Bethe’s, and Leslie Groves’.
