PUBLISHEROxford University Press
CITYOxford, England

This well-documented biography recounts the life of President Harry S. Truman from his early days in Missouri and local politics through his presidency and his death in 1972. The first part of the book thoroughly details Truman’s pre-presidential life, including his childhood, experiences in World War I, and early political life up through his tenure as Vice-President. The second part focuses primarily on Truman’s presidency and major issues and events of the times, such as the the Potsdam Conference, the decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan, the Cold War, McCarthyism, and the Korean War. The author is generally favorable to Truman, and tries to tie Truman’s life into contemporaneous changes in society.
